Music Classroom Wish List

In our music room, we are always looking for ways to incorporate new children's literature, puppets, songs, activities, and instruments. To help us get to our goals I am linking our Amazon Wish List to this blog. Here you will find many books and other classroom essentials that we will be able to use in our classroom. Please take a moment to check it out! Our classroom accepts any and all donations of music instruments and books and puppets. If you are cleaning out your childrens toyboxes and come across something you think we could use we will gladly accept your donations!  Hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Back to School!

Welcome back to school students of Park Ridge Niles SD 64!

I am so excited to start this year! Already there has been some wonderful things going on in the classrooms and the music room is no exception. For those of you that don't know, I am a traveling teacher between Carpenter and Washington Elementary Schools. Sometimes I travel to the classrooms on a "cart" and teach music there. Today was the first day of school at Washington Elementary and Carpenter Elementary but I only saw students at Washington. It was so wonderful to see smiling faces returning. There were a lot of new faces too. I think Washington registered some 20 new 1st grade students. That is practically a whole class!

Specials teachers help out classroom teachers at the beginning of the school year to help unload all of the school supplies students bring in. We get all of the materials organized and then students were treated to a WHOLE day of school. Needless to say many of them were a little tired when the day was done. I was able to see 4 first grade classes in the afternoon and we went over our classroom rules and expectations. (a separate post is coming on this)

All in all it was a great 1st day of school and I am excited for the year ahead of us!

Musical Flipped Learning

Ok I am still in this flipped class and I have learned a lot. I am not a sit and get learner- I don't do well in a "lecture" setting especially when the slides are available for me to look at on my own. This is part of the reason why I can't teach in a Sit and Get manner. Because I have needed to occupy myself during some of the workshop, I have found some GREAT videos and sites that might be able to fit into my flipped learning.

This is an example of a Flipped Blog from a 5th grade teacher in our district. He incorporates google forms with Flubaroo automatic grading to check for understanding. He also uses Screenr and the smartboard to basically record his lectures for the children to watch at home. Neat! Nice Job Jerry!

IBooks sees to be increasing in popularity so that students can access books from anywhere without having to carry it. These IBooks seem like something that these Flipped lessons would work really well with.

The following video is something I stumbled across while searching for possible topics/ videos that are relevant to music curricula. I was so impressed with the video that I had to post it

Flipped Learning in Music?

I am at a summer teacher workshop introducing flipped learning to a variety of educators from our district. Flipped learning is a way of increasing the interaction and contact time between teachers and students. It allows for students to take some responsibility for their own learning. Flipped learning is a great way to make sure that students who are absent do not get left behind their peers.  An additional benefit to flipped learning is that all of the educational content is archived for review. WOW this sounds great. Now the difficult part- can I flip my music class?

A little background on flipped learning:
Jonathon Bergman & Adam Sams were high school science teachers who created these videos for students who were absent in class and then they thought that they could incorporate these videos into curricular learning for all students. One more example of how a best practice for one becomes a universal design of learning for all.  Kind of neat in my opinion. They have a professional learning network for educators who use screencasting in their educational teaching. The PREZI below is an presentation by Melissa Postorino.

So how can I flip my Music Class? Chris Sepersky is a music education teacher & blogger in Milwaukee who posted about this exact topic with an interesting twist. He said that music might be the original flipped classroom because students have to take their instrument home and practice and learn it outside of class as well as inside of the classroom.  Thanks for your insight Chris!

Mark T Burke argues that you can use class time for specific classes (like a music appreciation or music theory and composition class) to create the product - composition, audio file, etc and use the videos to teach the academic content and check student understanding through quizzes and rubrics for compositions.

This sounds great for a classroom that is advances but I work with primarily Kindergarten and 1st grade students with a class each of 2nd and 3rd grade students. Perhaps I can use the concept of flipped learning for student review for when I introduce specific rhythms and melodic concepts.  Maybe I can pre-load our holiday concert songs into lecture so I dont have to lose classroom time to teach them those holiday songs. Any ideas? I am sure I will be revisiting this concept again in the very near future.
